2013: My Most Successful Year

Without a doubt, 2013 has been my most successful year since I started writing plays in the mid-1990s. Counting one-acts and three-acts together, there were 41 productions of my plays all over Ireland during the past year as well as a successful production of ‘The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley’ in Chicago.
The most-produced of my plays in 2014 was ‘The Maiden Aunt’ with 14 productions and over 60 performances followed by ‘The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley’.
I still can’t believe that I have come this far, having created a portfolio of 20 plays (15 three-acts and 5 one-acts) in 17 years. Maybe if I had realized in 1996 all the hard work and disappointment which lay ahead of me, I’d never have started. But I’m glad I did as my playwriting gives me a lot of comfort these days and helps me find the strength to deal with my mother’s on-going illness.
I’m not sure what 2014 will bring, but I’d be happy if was as successful. There are 11 confirmed productions with another couple almost certain, so it’s looking good.
I’d like to thank all the drama groups who picked my plays during the past and who have chosen one of my plays for next year. I’d like to wish you all a very happy and health-filled New Year!
Jimmy Keary.
